A free, copy-paste description structure. Fill the brackets and you have a description that is readable, keyword-friendly and links where you want people to go.
YouTube shows roughly the first 150 characters of your description in search and above the "β¦more" fold. So the opening line has to do the work: say what the video is and include your main keyword, in plain language. Everything below is mostly for people who clicked "β¦more".
Check your opening line's length with the character counter.
| Field | Limit | Shown (approx.) |
|---|---|---|
| Description | 5,000 characters | ~150 in search, ~2β3 lines above the fold |
| Hashtags | Up to 15 show; 3+ on the first line can appear above the title | β |
| Links | No strict limit | Above-the-fold links get more clicks |
Check the title, count the characters, and test the thumbnail β all free.
Title tester Character counter Thumbnail testerYes β YouTube and Google use it to understand the topic, and the first ~150 characters can appear in search. It is not as strong a signal as the title and thumbnail, but it is free to get right.
There is no ideal length, but a strong short description beats a padded long one. Most channels do well with 200β600 characters plus links, timestamps and hashtags.
Don't. Reusing one description makes every video look identical to search. Keep the links section reusable, but write a fresh first line and ABOUT section each time.
